Intuition, Emotion and Reason: Subtle Differences, Major Misconceptions
Intuition, Emotion and Reason are three ‘powers’ that many mistake for the other. Though they are closely related, each has its own distinct function and the mistaking of one for other tends to cause great damage in the lives of those not willing to learn how to properly identify each.
Intuition is a natural gift from God. We all are intuitive beings – though some are more intuitive than others. And some even enhance their intuitive abilities to use in the navigation of their own lives and/or to aide others through their trials and dilemmas. This elusive energy is just as powerful as its sisters Emotion and Reason, yet it is the ‘black sheep’ of the family; its ‘name’ tends to cause quite a stir with certain groups of people. Intuitive energy is subtle, ethereal and ‘arrives’ when summoned.
Emotion is also a natural a gift from God. We are born emotional and tend to ‘toughen up’ as we experience life. Furthermore, we all are emotional beings in the sense that our emotions are instinctual reactions to an effect, yet not all of us are able to emotionally identify or connect with others. Many of us can be sympathetic towards others, yet fewer are generous when sharing that tender energy with strangers, those they aren’t related to, those of another culture, race or belief system and so forth. And while it is good to have a healthy emotional understanding of ourselves, others and life experiences, it is not good to be an emotionally-based person, one whose decisions – major and minor – are all made out of respect to feelings, opinions and preferences.
The energy of Reason lays dormant until a need for its function arises. And once we begin to apply reasoning to various areas of our lives, we become empowered to make more rational decisions in a shorter amount of time. Unlike Intuition which can be enhanced via meditation and Emotion which can be cultivated through healed experiences, Reason is a mental application that requires trial and error in order for it to strengthen.
Intuition, Emotion and Reason all are emitted from three different ‘focal points’ – Intuition comes from the spirit; Emotion is fostered in the heart; and Reason is an application of the mind. Strong reasoning ability is a learned behavior; while emotional depth and resilience comes from enduring emotional experiences and healing from them. Intuitive ability, however, can be enhanced by dedicated meditation, which quiets your mind and calms your heart. And whether your Intuition speaks via your Inner Voice, or demonstrates itself via your hunches and feelings, a quiet mind and calm heart will enable you to know the difference between it and its two sisters, Emotion and Reason.
Emotion takes into account feelings, opinions and preferences, while Reason is based on consciousness and practicality. Intuition does not take into account feelings, opinions and preferences, nor is it based on consciousness and practicality; this power is purely divine energy that can influence a thought, visual, sound and/or feeling, that is neither based on any known forces nor have any rational explanation to support its persuasion. When being ‘intuitive’ about a specific decision or course of action, remember that it will be your first impulse, as Reason and Emotion need a moment to connect, and it will not have as its basis emotional dictates or logical attributes. Though those things may be automatically included in the outcome, the outcome is not created out of the knowledge and/or application of either.
I believe that if we could strike a perfect balance between Intuition, Emotion and Reason, our lives would dramatically change for the better, and overall fulfillment would not be something that is desired, it will be something that is enjoyed.
